The paw pads are the only part of a dog that touches hot asphalt, winter road salt, gravel and the floor at home. The skin there is thick, but it isn't invulnerable: it dries out and hardens. Paw balm is a cosmetic product based on plant oils and butters, formulated for exactly this area: it moisturises, soothes and softens rough, dry pads.

When you use it. After walks on scorching asphalt or on salted snow. In winter, when dry air and the swing from cold to warm harden the pads. In summer, after long stretches on gravel. Or simply when you feel the paw and the texture is no longer smooth but rough.

What it does, concretely. The formula, plant butters and oils (mango, cocoa, coconut, jojoba) bound with candelilla wax, moisturises and softens the thickened skin on the pads. Jojoba oil has a structure close to the skin's natural sebum. Calendula extract soothes and softens.

What it does NOT do. It isn't a medicine and it treats nothing. If the paw is bleeding, swollen, smells bad, or the dog is limping, go to the vet. A cosmetic balm doesn't replace an examination. The same goes if excessive licking persists: it's a signal with a cause behind it, and the cause is something you look for, not cover up.

Three formats, the same formula: the 30 ml tin for applying with your fingers, the 59 ml retractable stick for applying directly without getting your hands messy, and the 4.5 ml travel stick for your pocket.

How to serve it

Distract, apply, reward.
1. Distract them. A training treat or their favourite toy, applying it is much easier if your dog has something to do.
2. Clean the area. Wipe dust, mud or small stones off the pads and from between the toes.
3. Apply generously. With your fingertips or with a cloth that doesn't absorb the product, spread the balm straight onto the pads. With the 59 ml stick you apply straight onto the skin, without getting your hands messy; with the 30 ml tin, with your fingers.
4. Let it absorb. The paw stays slippery for a few minutes, so keep them busy until it dries (a belly scratch works).
5. Reward. A treat or a bit of play at the end, and next time they'll offer you the paw themselves.
Rhythm: one to three times a day, while the pads are rough. Space out the applications when the pads feel smooth to the touch again.
Practical tips
- The evening, before bed, is the ideal moment: your dog is settled and the balm has time to absorb.
- A thin sock over the paw, after applying, stops them licking it off before it absorbs.
- Combine it with a protective balm (paw wax) if you walk them on hard ground, one moisturises, the other protects.
Important: a cosmetic product, for external use. Contains essential oil, so apply only to the pads, not to mucous membranes, and stop your dog licking it immediately after applying. If the paw is bleeding, swollen, smells unpleasant, or the dog is limping, go to your vet.
